Narrative
Professor Irving I. Gottesman, Ph.D., FRCPsych(Hon), FKC(Hon) entered UMN in 1956 as a graduate student in the child clinical psychology training program, using his benefits on the G.I. Bill from his service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Upon graduation in 1960, following a one year residency on the inpatient service at the Minneapolis Veterans Admin. Hospital, he was appointed as Lecturer in the Departments of Social Relations and of Psychology at Harvard University. He returned to UMN in 1966 as founder of the Behavior Genetics Training Program in the Depts. of Psychology and Zoology and left in 1979 to become Professor of Psychiatric Genetics at Washngton University School of Medicine in the Depts. of Psychiatry and Genetics & Cell Biology. He returned to the UMN in 2001 after retirement from the University of Virginia as Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology Emeritus, and was elected Senior Fellow in the Dept. of Psychology and was appointed as Irving and Dorothy Bernstein Professor in Adult Psychiatry on an annual basis, ending July, 2012.
